Travelling by Rail in Canada
Train travel in North America, and in particular Canada, is not the most common mode
of travel for many residents. Nevertheless, rail travel remains popular with some people because of the scenic
routes that the trains take, as well as the spacious design of the train cars which ensure that your journey is as
comfortable as possible.
Moreover, it is more convenient to travel by train in Canada as opposed to airplane
as you do not have to wait long in lines as you do at airport security check points. Perhaps the only major
inconvenience with Canadian train travel is that the trains do not keep time as they do in Europe. As such, you may
find yourself waiting for your train to arrive for several hours. Nevertheless, the unique experience you will get
while on the train should make up for the wait and the long journey it takes.
All trains in Canada have coach seats. If you are taking a longer ride, you could
take one of their sleeper rooms for a nap. Of course, this will cost you more above your regular fare depending on
the amenities you want in your sleeper room. Some of the conveniences available include a private shower, toilet
and sink, as well as room service.

If you are a foreigner, you should also be able to get a better discounted deal on
your rail pass. The Canrailpass is valid on any train and route that Canada’s VIA Rail operates and allows you one
seat in “Comfort Class”. This pass will allow you twelve to fifteen days of unlimited travel within a period of
thirty days. VIA Rail also offers special stops to hikers, kayakers and other residents from remote areas in Canada
at almost any point on various rural routes. All you have to do is purchase your ticket and specify your exact
destination at least 48 hours in advance.
