Rail travel in Germany
Germany rail travel, best in europe ?
Generally speaking, European trains are amongst the best in the world. Germany’s InterCity Express or ICE is one of
the fastest trains in Europe and is miles ahead of others in terms of technological advances in the railway
transportation sector. The normal daily ICE trains traverse Europe, thereby offering a convenient way to connect
Germany with key European cities both inside and outside the country.
If you are planning to travel extensively in Germany via rail, you might want to purchase a Rail Pass. There are a
number of different types of rail services which are operated by Deutsche Bahn, German Railway. The EuroCity EC
trains are long distance trains which operate between major German cities, as well as other cities in Europe.
There are also a number of overnight trains also known as nachtzug – NZ. There are various classes of rail
travel offered on the long distance trains, the most comfortable being the schlafwagen, which provides sleeper
compartments for three passengers. The liegewagen cars provide sleeper compartments for between 4-6 persons, while
the sitzwagen cars only offer reclining seats.
When traveling by train in Germany, you can opt for the couchette mode of travel. This involves
travelling on a couchette car or Liegewagen which has compartments with regular seats by day, and sleeping bunks at
night. These cars are normally intended for those taking longer journeys such as from Frankfurt to Paris, or Munich
to Hamburg. The couchette seats are located on each side of the compartment and will convert into 4 or 6 sleeping
bunks when you need to sleep. In addition, the porter will provide you with a pillow, blanket and sheet per person.
If you value your privacy, you might not want to get a liegewagen as you will most likely find yourself having to
share with complete strangers overnight.
Just like in all other European trains, German trains have both first and second class travel, which are
normally designated with a large “1” or “2” sign, painted on the car near the door. If you want to save costs on
your train ticket, as well as avoid all the hassles of constantly having to buy tickets, you should purchase a rail
pass. You can go for either Eurailpass, Europass, German Rail Pass or Flexipass. However, if you
wish to travel on Deutsche Bahn, you will need to buy your tickets in advance and make your reservations. This is
especially recommended in the event that you wish to travel during peak periods such as during the summer, or even
just on the popular German trains.
In Germany, it is always advisable to reserve your seat on the train beforehand. If you don’t, be sure to avoid
sitting on the seats which have an orange reservation “reserviert” card on the luggage racks above them as these
are reserved seats. These reservation cards indicate which section of the train route is reserved for that seat. As
such, you can sit there until you reach the reserved section, or sit there after the person reserving the seat
alights. You can also check with the conductor to confirm which seats are reserved and which ones are not.
